  • Primary Curriculum | Garden House Waldorf School

Primary Waldorf Education Approach The child’s changing consciousness is the beginning, middle and end of our curricula. We ask: how does the subject support the needs of the growing child? The curriculum serves the needs of the child. This is the reverse of the normal dynamic and is a hallmark of Waldorf education. The children therefore can experience their education as highly meaningful, which has a tremendous impact on their motivation in later life. The Waldorf method integrates the arts and movement into all academic disciplines, from preschool to twelfth grade, to enrich and enhance the learning experience. This approach is designed to inspire lifelong learning and enable every student to fully develop their unique capacities. Research into human resilience shows that a child’s health and inclination toward life-long learning is promoted neither by intellectual instruction nor by cognitive reflection, but rather by cultivating [bringing to maturity] the emotional and volitional life. Tobias Richter, Tapestry of a Waldorf Curriculum. “The development of any school subject needs to relate intimately with the overall help the teacher is trying to give to the growing child as its incarnating spirit takes stronger command over his bodily and psychic organisms. Each year of childhood sees new requirements in soul and moral capacities as well as in physical life. So mathematics teaching has to align itself, not just to intellectual development but take into account the whole human being, who has lungs, limbs and a heart as well as a head.” - Ron Jarman Other Subjects Specialty subjects such as art, crafts, eurythmy, foreign languages (Mandarin and German), gardening, cooking, music, and physical education are taught year-round at Waldorf schools. These subjects provide students with a more holistic education often continuing the theme of the main lesson (q.v.) and likewise determined by the soul and moral requirements. Subjects are Experiential At Waldorf schools, students are encouraged to experience subjects such as music, dance, theatre, writing, literature, legends, and myths, rather than simply reading about them and taking tests. By doing so, Waldorf students cultivate a number of their capacities and become individuals who are certain of their paths and ready to serve the world. Main Lesson Period The school day at Waldorf schools begins with a two-hour “main lesson” period, where students focus intensively on one theme for three to four weeks. This approach allows for a deeper exploration of the subject matter and encourages different modes of expression and experience to be incorporated. Main Lesson Books Students create their own ‘textbooks’ based on material presented by their teacher. As they progress through the grades, group discussions, reference books, independent research and classic literature increasingly supplement the teacher's oral presentations. This approach encourages students to take an active role in their learning and helps to develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. Class 6 The child takes a firm, intentional step into the outer world and becomes aware of the changes in their body. With increasing awareness of the physical self, the time is right for study of the physical body of the earth. Our school began in 2008 when our founder, Cannie Pang, began with playgroups and kindergarten on this site. In 2021, Cannie and Jane Song shared their passion for holistic education and co-founded the Waldorf Primary School on the 1st floor of our existing building (above Garden House Waldorf Kindergarten). Their vision was to provide a seamless learning journey for children, all under one roof. Since then, we have grown to offer a comprehensive learning experience for children from Playgroup through to Primary School (Class 1 to Class 3 in 2022-3, growing to Class 1 to 8 by 2027-8). • Garden House Farm | Garden House

Garden House Farm Garden House is fortunate to have a 1,000 sq metre farm and garden located just minutes away from our campus in Sai Kung. This bountiful land produces vegetables and fruits that are used in our school's kitchen. Through the farm and garden program, children learn valuable skills that are often lost in today's industrialized society. They have the opportunity to tend to the soil, compost, plant, harvest, care for animals, and learn about the natural world around them. Younger children play and explore on the farm, while older students engage in more advanced activities such as plant propagation and the study of healing plants. They also learn about nutrition through cooking, drying, and processing food. We are deeply committed to preserving and maintaining the farm, a commitment that has been affirmed since 2009. Our goal is to provide a meaningful and enriching experience for our students, while also instilling a sense of responsibility and respect for the land. • Our Ethos | Garden House School

Ethos Value We believe that education is not confined to the classroom or to childhood. Our students and teachers alike are lifelong learners, and our curriculum is designed to nurture the individual within the community and within the natural world. Children learn how their actions affect others and how we are all part of, and responsible for, something much larger. With high ethical and moral standards and the motivation and capacity to lead, they emerge as thoughtful, confident, and responsible adults. Mission Vision We are here to ignite a love of learning within each student and create an environment that fosters growth and inspiration by awakening and nourishing the unique capacities of each child in all dimensions physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. Our curriculum, grounded in artistic and practical work, is designed to foster intellectual curiosity, social sensitivity and physical stamina, thereby developing within each student a feeling for beauty, clarity of thought, and a strong inner motivation. Four Pillars At Garden House, we strongly believe in the core principles of Waldorf Education. To further highlight these principles, we have developed Four Pillars which serve as a guiding tool for our teachers and staff. Our Four Pillars hold specific meaning for our students. Firstly, we aim to instill a Passion for Life in our students, encouraging them to embrace all aspects of life with enthusiasm and curiosity. Secondly, we strive to develop Ethical and Collaborative Skills, empowering our students to become responsible and compassionate members of their communities. We also prioritize the development of solid physical, emotional, intellectual, and social foundations in our students. We believe that a well-rounded education is essential for thriving in all aspects of life, and we strive to provide our students with the tools and skills they need to flourish. Finally, we place great emphasis on Multi-disciplinary artistic experiences. We believe that artistic expression is a fundamental part of human experience and that exposure to a variety of art forms can enrich and enhance learning. By providing an education based on the Four Pillars, we aim to nurture and develop well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society. • Events | Garden House Waldorf School

Events Festivals and Special Events Festival and celebrations are a central part of Waldorf education. Our school aims to awaken the child’s natural reverence for the wonder and beauty of life. Participating in festivals nurtures the child’s inner experience of the rhythms of the year and a sense of community is cultivated. We encourage all of the children and their families to participate in these wonderful community events where we carefully consider the qualities of the season to be celebrated. Singing Group Our singing group is made up of teachers, parents, and friends who gather for fun. It's a place where you can cut loose and unwind once a week. We sing for enjoyment and have opportunities to sing at events like the Garden House Christmas Fair. We would love to have you join us and welcome your voice to our group! Come for a session, sing and get to know our community. We also welcome youth participation (high school and up) as well. 1.5 hour/session (ongoing) Free Adults only Every Wednesday 6:00pm - 7:30pm Form Drawing The living life of lines Twice a month we meet to explore the movement art of form drawing. Movement art? you say, Yes, movement art, because we don’t draw to create a work of art. That’s not our goal (though we are allowed to take satisfaction in our beautiful drawing). The art lies in the movement itself and the crayon on paper is just a memory, a recording of that movement. This movement has an effect on us, sometimes calming, sometimes exciting! And in this way, we come to discover aspects of ourselves and the world, and discover how the world of straight line and curve has a deep inner connection with our human being. Contact the school office if this sounds interesting to you. 1 hour/session (ongoing) Free Adults only Saturday 10:30am 11:30am Open Day Get involve with the creative world of Garden House Waldorf School through tours of the classes. Explore our cozy classrooms and experience first hand the benefits of our nourishing rhythm and play based curriculum. The open day showcase all areas of the school from playgroups through primary. Bring your children and fall in love with our program. Our warm and wonderful teachers will guide you through with baking, crafting or being a student yourself in a grade classroom.
